In the second grade our teacher was Miss Elofson in third, Miss Waters in fourth, Miss Sundre in fifth, Miss Rud and in sixth, Miss Pladson. I remember the smell exuded by the wet wool of our coats and scarves. In the winter we had to put them on under our dresses and then take them off and hang them in the cloak room, which was adjacent to almost every classroom. In those days girls were not allowed to wear slacks in school. In Miss Wyckoff 's classes we not only learned to draw, but once a week we had art appreciation and learned about great artists. Miss Evingson taught us music and was a cheery woman, but my favorite was Miss Wyckoff, who taught art. In the library, which also served as the auditorium, Miss Garmann had a passion for books and she passed them on to her students. Miss Clemens, who taught science and geography, was demanding and rather severe. When my mother suggested that Miss Knutson give me more to do, she was told that I would get ahead of the other children and that wouldn't be right.īut other teachers did not have that attitude. #Horacemann firstclass how toSince I'd been to nursery school and kindergarten, I already knew how to read, and as I recall, my parents were told I was a disruptive influence. It was a good school then, and if the enthusiasm of the neighbors who rallied around to object to the proposed closing is any indication, it still is. Built in 1915, Horace Mann is still in use despite recent efforts to close it. I went to Horace Mann Elementary School, 1025 Third St. It also meant that they had most of the same teachers as their older or younger siblings had.Īnd sometimes, if the family remained in the same neighborhood for two or more generations, one ended up with some of the same teachers one's parents had. It used to be that when a family lived in the same neighborhood for many years, all of the children in the family went to the same schools.
